Are you scared of getting dental work done or gets anxious at the thought of a trip to the dentist?
If this is you, we are fully equipped to help calm that storm. Our friendly team is dedicated to making you feel welcomed and at ease the moment you walk through the door. Furthermore, our experienced dentists are also up to date with several methods to help relieve your anxiety and making sure that your experience is as comfortable as possible.
Our range of methods includes oral sedation, inhalation using nitrous oxide and the careful administration of local anesthesia.
To help ease your anxiety, we can prescribe an oral sedative agent, usually Benzodiazepam, which can be purchased at a pharmacy. The dose of medication that we prescribe will provide minimal to moderate sedation, thus alleviates your fear and anxiety while retaining your consciousness. This type of sedation at low dosage has been applied in dentistry for the past decade, its safety margin and effectiveness are well founded by a body of research in our available databases.
It is recommended that the medication is taken one hour prior to the appointment. A driver or carer is required to drive you to the practice, remain in the practice during your treatment and escort you home afterwards as you will not be able to drive. We also advise that somebody is available to monitor or assist you at home for the next 24 hours.
Conscious Sedation (Nitrous Oxide or Laughing Gas)
This is an inhalation type sedation, the gas that is responsible for producing the calming effect is nitrous oxide (N2O). It has no odour or colour and does not cause irritation, reported allergies to nitrous oxide is also very rare.
Nitrous oxide is one of the most commonly used sedation technique in dentistry as it is safe and effective with fast onset and easily reversed by oxygen administration. The gas is delivered via a nose piece, after 3-5 minutes of inhalation you will begin to experience a calming euphoric effect. Some patients have reported to experience auditory and visual hallucinations. More frequently however is the report of light-headedness and getting the giggles, which is the reason why this type of sedation is widely known as laughing gas.
To ensure that patients experience no pain during treatment, our experienced dentists will administer adequate local anesthetic close to the associated nerves. We also apply topical numbing gel to make certain that the injection is scarcely felt. Numerous patients have reported that they barely felt the dreaded needle when being treated by our dentists!
We provide local anesthetic in adjunction to oral sedation and/or conscious sedation to minimize operative and post-operative pain. It is most likely that you won’t remember having the anesthetic injection afterwards if you are receiving treatment under sedation.
